How to Tell If Your Computer is a 32-bit or 64-bit

Until the early 2000′s, all personal computer were 32-bit. The term 32-bit or 64-bit describes a type of computer architecture, explaining in a simple way the amount of data the computer’s central processing unit (CPU) handles data simultaneously. Think of 32-bit and 64-bit as a juggler juggling balls. A 32-bit juggler can handle 4 balls simultaneously with ease and speed. Add another couple of balls, and the juggler may slow down considerably or stumble entirely. A 64-bit juggler, however, can manage 8 balls simultaneously.

Obviously, a 64-bit computer would process data much faster than a 32-bit computer. The caveat is that a 64-bit computer needs 64-bit software to really take advantage of it’s speedy properties. The 64-bit computer can handle 32-bit software, but the user won’t notice a big difference in speed.

Most computers today are 64-bit machines. Computer users do much more with computers than 10 years ago– we edit photos and videos, stream movies, play games. And while we do all those things, we also expect the computer to check the email and instant messenger, and other smaller duties. 64-bit machines are slightly more expensive, too. Some computer manufacturers still offer 32-bit machines, although these are marketed as basic, budget machines for people who want a computer to simply check email and surf the web.

You need to know if your machine is a 32-bit or 64-bit. Software, such as games, firewalls, antivirus programs and other utilities, are sensitive to the type of computer you have. You cannot install 64-bit software on a 32-bit machine.

Here’s how to tell what your computer is.

For a Windows Vista or Windows 7 Machine:

1. Go to the Start menu. If you have a Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer, type “System” in the search bar window. Click “System” that appears in the list.

2. Scroll down and look for “System type.” There your answer is.

For a Windows XP or Earlier Machine:

1. Click the Start Menu. Select “Run” in the menu.

2. Type sysdm.cpl in the text bar. Click “OK.”

3. Select “System Summary.” Look under “Item” for “Processor.”

4. If the value says x86, the computer is a 32-bit machine. If the value says ia64 or AMD64, the machine is 64-bit.
